11.-13.3.2026 - Nanojoining Innovations from Germany and Switzerland at Verbund 2026

From March 11 to 13, 2026, the “Verbund 2026” conference took place at Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany. It was organized, among others, by Prof. Guntram Wagner, who is also a member of the NMJ International Steering Committee. The event served as an important exchange platform for innovation in joining technologies and composite materials bringing together researchers and industry experts to discuss emerging trends, technological challenges and new developments. Contributions from Switzerland and Germany highlighted the strong role both countries play in advancing nano- and microjoining.

Jolanta Janczak-Rusch (Empa, Switzerland), also a member of the NMJ International Steering Committee, presented in her plenary lecture the development of nanoscale multilayer composites driven by the complex requirements of today's joining technology. This new sub-class of composite materials show unique properties and open new pathways to fast, low-temperature (nano)joining processes as well as novel applications in thermal management.

Markus Glaser (TU Ilmenau, Germany) introduced an innovative on-demand joint separation concept using structured reactive Al/Ni multilayers. He successfully demonstrated this bonding-debonding approach for hybrid thermoplastic–metal joints. The resulting joints show strong bonding performance while enabling disassembly at the end of their service life.

Denise Eusewig (TU Chemnitz, Germany) presented a poster on the nanojoining of aluminum alloys using copper nanopaste. The study confirmed the feasibility of this low-temperature joining approach and examined the impact of critical process parameters, including heating cycle and different oxide-layer removal strategies, such as ultrasound treatment and specialized fluxes, on joint quality.

In addition, Benjamin Sattler (TU Chemnitz, Germany) presented the development of modified nickel nanopastes that enable pressureless nanojoining. By forming a transient liquid phase during processing, this approach reduces porosity and improves bond quality while eliminating the need for mechanical pressure.

Overall, the contributions underscore that Germany and Switzerland remain highly active in advancing nano- and microjoining technologies. The presentations reflect the strong momentum within the European research community and its commitment to developing innovative, application-oriented joining solutions.

17.-21.11. 2025 - The 6th NMJ Conference in Yeongju (Korea)

The 6th International Conference on Nanojoining and Microjoining conference was successfully hosted in Yeongju (Korea) from 17th – 21th November 2025 with a total of 125 participants, where as 7 keynotes, 43 invited, 36 orals, 39 posters. The NMJ Association ist very grateful to the local conference chairs Jae Pil Jung (Univ. of Seoul, Korea) and Anming Hu (Univ. of Tennessee Knoxville, USA) for organizing this very successful event.

27.-29.11.2023 - The 5th NMJ Conference in Leipzig (Germany)

The 5th International Conference on Nanojoining & Microjoining was successfully hosted in Leipzig, Germany, from 27th - 29th November 2023. The physical meeting was attended by 83 participants from many countries around the globe! The opening remarks were followed by more than two days of technical program with 11 sessions and a total of 51 oral talks. The full technical program can be found here. The NMJ Association is grateful to the local conference chairs Prof. Guntram Wagner and Dr. Susann Hausner for organizing this very successful event.

7.7.2022 - First Virtual Event on Nano- and Micro-Joining

On July 7th, 2022, the International Association for Nanojoining and Microjoining organized the first virtual NMJ event. The meeting was attended by an impressive number of 142 participants from 16 different countries around the globe! The opening remarks by the president of the NMJ association, Dr. Lars Jeurgens (Empa, Switzerland), were followed by three plenary lectures by leading researchers in the field. First, Prof. Norman Zhou (Univ. Waterloo, Canada) presented a historical view on the development of the NMJ community. His talk "Building an International Committee on Microjoining and Nanojoining" is also documented in his personal notes (download here). Next, we were honoured to have a retirement lecture entitled "Footprints on the Path of Nano-Micro Joining Research" by Prof. Akio Hirose (Osaka Univ, Japan), who was among the first in the world to realize low-temperature sinter-bonding using Ag nanopaste as an alternative to conventional soldering. Finally, Prof. Anming Hu (Univ. Tennessee, USA) presented a technical overview on "Recent Progress of Nano-Micro-Joining", focusing on key scientific achievement published by the community during the pandemic. A second virtual scientific event will be scheduled prior to the physical NMJ conference in November 2023 in Dresden, Germany. So please stay tuned!

25.1.2023 - Second Virtual Event on Nano- and Micro-Joining

On January 25th, 2023, the International Association for Nanojoining and Microjoining organized the second virtual NMJ event. The meeting was attended by an impressive number of about 170 participants from 16 different countries around the globe! The opening remarks by the president of the NMJ association, Dr. Lars Jeurgens (Empa, Switzerland), were followed by a short announcement of the upcoming NMJ conference in Leipzig by Dr. Susann Hauser. Next, two plenary lectures and six short talks were presented by leading researchers in the field. The first plenary lecture entitled "Physics of Nanojoning" was given by Prof. Walter Duley, University of Waterloo, Canada, which was followed by a plenary talk entitled "Dewetting phenomena in nanosystems" by Prof. Eugen Rabkin, Technion University, Israel. The full list of speakers can be found here. Please submit your abstract to the upcoming NMJ'23 conference in Leipzig. We are looking forward to meeting you there in person!
